Professor Elizabeth Elliott, Director

Professor Elliott founded the APSU in 1993 and has been the Director of the Unit since its inception. She is a Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Services at the University of Sydney and a consultant paediatrician at The Children's Hospital at Westmead.  Professor Elliott was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia in June 2008 for academic services to paediatrics and child health, research, education and the establishment of the Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit.

Guy joined the APSU in April 2021 and is an experienced Epidemiologist who was previously the Co-Director of The Whiteley-Martin Research Centre and the Centre for Evidence-based Surgery (C4EBS) at Nepean Hospital.  In addition, he had completed postdoctoral training at The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and The University of Sydney.  He is interested in rare diseases and cancers as well as rare causes of cancer.

Suzy joined the APSU in November 2017.  She is a postdoctoral researcher, having previously worked in infectious diseases epidemiology research at The Children’s Hospital Westmead (Perinatal infection epidemiology group) and at The University of New South Wales (Inflammation and Infection Research Centre).  Suzy completed a PhD in 2005 at The University of Sydney (Institute for Immunology and Allergy Research, WIMR) examining candidate susceptibility genes for multiple sclerosis, and has research interests in infectious diseases, immunology, neurology and genetics.

Carlos joined the APSU in 2018 before completing his PhD on cancer epidemiology at the University of Sydney.  Carlos is a Research Associate at the APSU, managing the non-infectious research portfolio.  Currently, Carlos’ research interests include the understanding of causes, risk factors and the burden of rare paediatric diseases in order to contribute to policy relevant epidemiological evidence in paediatric health care services.
